Lambretta LD Mk3 1958 Flywheel Removal
For indexing purposes, this post applies to Lambretta LD 1950, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1954, 1955, 1956, 1957, 1958 Flywheel Removal using a 19mm thin walled socket and LD flywheel removal tool.
The You Tube video link below shows me removing a 1958 LD Lambretta Flywheel AFTER it was removed by me already. I then put it back together and took another video. Unfortunately, You Tube picked up some copyright music in the background of the original removal, so I was not able to publish the first dismantling which showed the force required and pop noise, when the flywheel was prized away using the special tool. I will endeavour to upload another video from another Lambretta at a later date that shows me completing the task for the first time, so that you may hear the “pop” / sound it may make when holding the spanner on the special tool and turning the special tool bolt clockwise, to prize the flywheel away.
Information and Notes
Notes on this removal and issues I encountered during the first removal, which was probably the first time in many year, included
Flywheel turning while trying to undo nut: This Lambretta has a seized piston. There were therefore no actions required in holding the flywheel from turning. See Flywheel Turning post for further information in this area. I am still working on the seized piston at the moment. See seized piston post for information on this topic.
NUT & Washer removal: A number of Lambretta LD’s requires a 19mm thin wall socket to remove the nut. In my experience of an LD, not all LD’s have the issue with requiring an extra thin 19mm socket. The LD in the video is a late 1958 Mk3
Having researched online and purchasing a few sockets that I thought were extra thin walled sockets, the best solution I found was to buy a 17mm / 19mm & 21mm set from Amazon for £10.90 (See image below to use as a reference).
I then removed the 19mm protective white sleeve plastic casing by hand and filed down the 19mm socket slightly, using a metal file.
I was then able to place the socket inside the hole to loosen the 19mm nut, without damaging the outer thread, that the special tool then needs to be screwed into after the removal of the nut and washer.
Please note that you do not need to file down the 19mm thin wall socket very much if purchasing the same sockets I did on Amazon. However, you should file it down enough so that you do not cause damage to the outer thread, which is required for the flywheel removal tool after the nut and washer have been removed.
Special Tool & Force Required: The video does NOT show the force required when I was prizing the flywheel off using the special tool. You see a flywheel that I have already removed / reassembled and then removed again – the second time WITH EASE.

After the nut and washer removal, the flywheel removal tool does not need to be tightened up very tight. I tightened it as tight as I could (but not with much force, just enough to know it was on and as far down the hole as I could screw it) and then loosen it off half a turn. I then used a spanner and the 19mm socket to loosen it (anticlockwise). You may hear a pop when you loosen it and it did require some force to loosen the nut.
